Chester the Cool Cat and the Secret of Cool

In all situations, Chester the Cool Cat has taught us how to behave.

Chester tells us: Don't be HOT!

Don't be COLD!

The three steps for acting cool are:

Look Cool,

Think Cool, and

Act Cool!!!!

Strategies for dealing with Criticism

When being criticized, if the criticism is fair, the cool response is:

Accept and apologize!

If the criticism is unclear, the cool response is:

Ask for an explanation and if fair, accept and apologize!

If the criticism is unfair, the cool response is:

Explain your side!

Strategies for dealing with teasing

The first response against teasing is to:

Ignore the teaser!

If ignoring doesn't work try:

Laughing it off and changing the subject.

When teasing is hurtful, use the Four Step Plan to ask the teaser to stop:

1. Tell what behavior you don't like.

2. Tell how the behavior makes you feel.

3. Tell what behavior you want.

4. Tell what would happen if you can't work things out.

Strategies for coping with bullies

Don't look helpless when being bullied. The Cool approach is:

Look the Look-have a confident attitude.

If it continues, stand your ground and "talk the talk."

Use the Four Step Plan to handle peer pressure.

If "talk the talk" doesn't work, "walk the walk."

Make demands with the threat of going to an authority figure for help if necessary.

Note: We always tell the students that with any step or strategy, if the bullying or teasing is being done by stranger(s) or there is a physical threat, the Cool response is to get an authority figure immediately.

Strategies for dealing with anger- others

If another's anger is fair:

Accept, apologize and make up.

If another's anger is unfair:

Explain your side and take a break.

Strategies for dealing with anger- self

When others make it difficult for you act cool and don't get upset but:

Use the Four Step Plan to handle you frustrations with difficult people.

When others don't follow through:

Use the Four Step Plan to handle broken promise situations that make you angry.
